Yoga and Exercise for Hearing Loss

Improve Hearing Loss with Yoga & Cardio Exercise

Hearing loss is a major public health issue. It is the third most common physical condition after arthritis and heart disease. Approximately 20 percent of adults in the United States experience some degree of hearing loss

Did you know that everyday exercise and yoga routines can actually improve your hearing?

Cardio Exercise for Hearing Loss

Cardio exercise gets your blood pumping and, as the name suggests, is healthy for your heart. One thing most people usually don’t realize is increased blood flow is also good for your hearing.

The ability to hear has a lot to do with the inner ear circulation. Blood circulation supports bodily functions and supplies the body with the essential nutrients it needs to function properly. Maintaining healthy blood circulation in the inner ear is crucial for better hearing health.

Hearing Loss Yoga Treatment

People with hearing loss may be skeptical about trying yoga. They wonder if they will be able to hear the instructor well enough to follow along in a class or if their devices will fall off when performing different yoga poses. It’s important to find a yoga studio or gym that realized and addresses these concerns. At Fitness is My Sickness our yoga instructors are trained to accommodate all types of disabilities so you don’t feel awkward about talking to the teacher regarding your hearing loss. It is typical for our members to discuss physical limitations with the yoga teacher prior to class starting.

Yoga classes combine poses with deep breathing exercises to increase blood flow to our ears and sinuses. This improves the functioning nerves in our ears and nose.

Yoga Postures that Help Hearing Loss

Big Toe Pose (Padangusthansana) – This pose lengthens and strengthens tight hamstrings while sending a flow of blood to the head that clears out blocked passages in your ears, nose, and throat.

Extended Triangle Pose (Utthita Trikonasana) – An essential yoga pose that increases the blood flow to the brain and ear sending massive amounts of fresh blood to head and neck when the head hangs to one side. This relaxes the muscles so the damaged veins pop up.

Camel Pose (Ustrasana) – The camel pose not only opens the chest improving respiration it also increases blood flow to head and neck clearing blocked passages in the throat and ears.

Fish Pose (Matsyasana) – This yoga pose expands your bronchial tubes, stretches your chest an abdomen while increasing blood flow to the ears and brain. It’s also one of the best yoga poses for posture.

Downward-Facing Dog (Adho Mukha Svanasana) – This classic yoga pose decreases back pain, elongates the spine, opens the chest and oxygenates the ears and sinuses while strengthening the entire body. Blood circulation is enhanced throughout the entire body reducing inflammation.
